Texan Runs Computer Scam, State Says

SEATTLE (CN) - A Texan defrauds people nationwide by sending pop-up messages that claim their computers have a "critical error," and directing the users to a Web site where he offers a "free scan," then charges $39.95 for a bogus "repair," the State of Washington claims in Federal Court. It sued James Reed McCreary IV, of The Woodlands, and his companies Branch Software and Alpha Red, for their "Registry Cleaner" product.
