Tenant wins workers comp

HONOLULU — A Hawaii tenant won his workers’ compensation claim against his landlord on the theory that, when he fell and injured his arm while performing roof repairs, his landlord was effectively his employer. The Hawaii Supreme court agrees because the tenant’s repair, maintenance and improvement work was integral to the landlord’s rental business, so an employer-employee relationship existed between them under Hawaii law.
