WASHINGTON (CN) – Don’t you hate it when a caller hangs up on you twice, and then will only talk to your answering machine.
Prerecorded messages usually are what cause this.
The Federal Trade Commission has issued rules to stop prerecorded telemarketing messages from intruding on privacy unless the receiver has consented, and to require the ability to opt out of the call and get off the list.
While the opt out message must be in place by Dec. 1, the hang ups likely will not stop until next September, when, also, a prior business relationship with the receiver of the message does not get the telemarketer off the hook.
