JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - A Georgia telemarketing firm that violated Missouri's No Call list will pay the state $300,000 in penalties and will stop violating the No Call list, Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster announced. It is the third highest penalty in the history for violations of the No-Call program.
Koster says VersaDebt and Debtsafe were making calls offering consumers lower credit card interest rates in exchange for a fee, but the companies never purchased the state's No Call list. The attorney general got an injunction in June 2008 against the companies and the settlement will ensure no further violations, Koster says. The agreement was submitted as an assurance of voluntary compliance filed in St. Louis County Court and was signed by Judge Edward W. Sweeney.
"The No Call program is one of the most successful and popular programs in the history of Missouri state government, and I am committed to continuing the excellent work that began under former Attorney General Jay Nixon," Koster said in a statement. "Consumers who sign up for No Call expect their dinner hour to be protected from annoying telemarketing calls, and we will do our part to see that telemarketers take our laws and our privacy seriously."
