Tech Complaint|Focuses on Imports

(CN) - Pragmatus claims that Research in Motion, Samsung and other tech companies import devices that violate its teleconferencing patents, in a complaint to the U.S. International Trade Commission.

The five patents allow users to connect to one another through a graphic Rolodex-like interface that accesses a changeable database of contact information. The technology allows each party on the call to participate through instant messaging, texting, e-mail, video or voice, and tracks and integrates the information.

Pragmatus complaint asks the ITC to launch a Section 337 investigation - names after a section of the Tariff Act - to determine if the suspect devices infringe its patents, and if so, to ban their importation.

Pragmatus cites Research in Motion's Playbook and Samsung's Galaxy SII Skyrocket and Galaxy Tab 10.1 as infringing, as well as Pantech's Burst and Element, and the ASUS Transformer Prime.

The ITC is a popular forum to try patent cases on goods made outside the United States, because it usually reaches a decision within a year. Its decisions can be appealed only to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Pragmatus' complaint was filed by Anthony Grillo with Marino and Grillo, of Radnor, Pa.
