A district court in Iowa entered an order agreed to by the state and Planned Parenthood, which had sought an injunction to stop a proclamation it interpreted as restricting almost all surgical abortions. The state clarified the proclamation only suspends “nonessential” surgical abortions and also allows for the consideration of whether the timing of a patient’s pregnancy would prevent her from obtaining a legal abortion after the expiration of the proclamation.

Federal Judge Blocks Texas Ban on Abortions During Outbreak

Texas pushed back Monday against Planned Parenthood’s challenge to an executive order banning unnecessary surgeries during the Covid-19 pandemic, saying surgical abortions are not medically necessary and nonsurgical abortions are also included in the ban as the state tries to conserve medical supplies.

Planned Parenthood Sues Texas Over Halt on Abortions

Planned Parenthood and several other abortion providers sued Texas’ Republican leaders in federal court Wednesday, challenging an executive order that temporarily halts all non-essential surgeries due to fears it may be used to block non-surgical abortions as the state seeks to conserve medical supplies and clear hospital beds to handle the COVID-19 pandemic.
