A court did not violate a defendant’s civil rights by considering his association with an Amish community when it sentenced him to prison for sexually assaulting family members when he was a minor, an appeals court in Wisconsin ruled. One of the court’s reasons for sentencing the defendant to prison was to encourage interventions by adults in the community to protect girls from assaults by family members.
