The estate of a 36-year-old woman with hypertension who died while in pretrial detention in Covington County Jail may pursue deliberate indifference, failure to train and civil rights claims against several defendants, a federal court in Alabama ruled. The woman had repeatedly asked for medical assistance in the weeks before her death and was only given aspirin.

Death Doulas

A federal court in California granted a preliminary injunction to a group of “end of life doulas” in their lawsuit challenging the California Cemetery and Funeral Bureau’s demands they become licensed funeral directors. The doulas, associated with the nonprofit the Full Circle of LIving and Dying, offer “advice, counseling and other services to families and loved ones of those who are dying.”
