Taco King Sentenced To Prison

SAN DIEGO - Karl James, who owned more than 50 Taco Bells in Southern California and Arizona, was sentenced Friday to 3 years in prison for bankruptcy fraud and tax evasion, and ordered to pay $2.3 million in back taxes and restitution to creditors he defrauded. James, owner of Golden West Tacos, diverted and hid income and property ownership, including mansions in Rancho Santa Fe and Palm Springs. Among other things, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, he bought half interest in an airplane with corporate money and put the title in the name of his dead father.
