Swine Slaughter

A federal court in New York refused to dismiss conservation groups’ suit challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s implementation of the “Modernization of Swine Slaughter Inspection” rule. The plaintiffs claim the rule reduced federal oversight and eliminated line speed limits at pig slaughterhouses, posing “serious risks to animal welfare, consumer health and safety, and the environment.”

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A federal court in New York refused to dismiss conservation groups’ suit challenging the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s implementation of the “Modernization of Swine Slaughter Inspection” rule. The plaintiffs claim the rule reduced federal oversight and eliminated line speed limits at pig slaughterhouses, posing “serious risks to animal welfare, consumer health and safety, and the environment.”
