WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to consider whether the District of Columbia could ban handguns, a divisive case involving the Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms." See order.
The Washington, D.C. government wants the high court to uphold a gun-control law that prevents residents from keeping handguns in their homes. The Second Circuit struck down the ban as unconstitutional in March, saying the Constitution protects an individual's right to bear arms, not just the collective right of state governments to arm their militias.
