Supreme Court Says No Cameras for Prop. 8 Trial

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - Cameras will not be allowed in the courtroom for the federal trial challenging the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday.

By 5-4 vote, the justices ruled that supporters of Prop. 8 "have demonstrated that irreparable harm would likely result" if the trial were broadcast.

Presiding U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker had planned to post the proceedings on his court's Web site through YouTube, stressing the "importance of the public's right to access judicial proceedings." The trial began Monday.

Writing in dissent, Justice Charles Breyer objected that the Supreme Court majority was seeking to "micromanage district court proceedings."
