Sun Says Newspaper Spoof Went Too Far

VANCOUVER, B.C. (CN) - Horizon Publications and an anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian activist, Mordecai Briemberg, defamed and injured the Vancouver Sun newspaper by publishing a fake edition of the Sun, full of anti-Israel propaganda, the Sun's corporate parent claims in a demand for punitive damages in BC Supreme Court.

Plaintiff Canwest Mediaworks Publications also sued Horizon's president, Garth Leddy. Canwest claims the defendants printed a counterfeit edition of the Sun and distributed 12,000 copies of it on June 7, and also posted the false publication on Briemberg's Web site, Canpalnet, and on other Israel-hating, pro-Palestinian Web sites.

Canwest demands an injunction and punitive damages for defamation, trademark infringement and other counts. It is represented by David Church. See complaint.
