Studios Sue Chinese DVD Player Makers

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Five major movie studios claim two Chinese companies are making and selling DVD players without the copyright-protecting Content Scramble System, which prevents illegal duplication of movies. Defendants in the two federal lawsuits are Gowell Electronic and Janjing Wanlida Technology Co.

Plaintiffs Twentieth Century Fox, Universal City Studios, Walt Disney Pictures, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and Paramount Pictures Corp. demand damages for breach of contract. The defendants obtained licenses to make the machines from the DVD Copy Control Association, which requires the Content Scramble System, the complaints state.

The studios are represented in both cases by Christopher Caldwell, with Caldwell, Leslie & Proctor.
