Studios Demand Millions From Lime Wire

MANHATTAN (CN) - Dozens of recording studios demand millions of dollars from Lime Wire and its bosses, claiming they are "Internet pirates unlawfully copying and distributing plaintiffs' copyrighted musical works on a massive scale, and profiting greatly from their illegal activities."

Lead plaintiff EMI April Music claims the Manhattan Federal Court already has found Lime Wire liable for intentionally encouraging copyright infringement, in Arista Records LLC v. Lime Group LLC, et al. The studios claim the same issues, and the same recordings, are involved in this case.

The studios also sued Lime Wire CEO Mark Gorton, who is 100 percent owner of Lime Wire, and Greg Bildson, who was chief technology officer and COO of Lime Wire from 2000 until he left it in the summer of 2008.

The plaintiffs, which include major studios such as Sony, Universal, and WB Music, demand statutory damages of $150,000 per copyright violation, and actual damages.

They are represented in Federal Court by Lisa Buckley with Pryor Cashman.
