Strategy Against Gender Violence Announced

(CN) - President Barack Obama announced a multiyear executive strategy to improve prevention of violence against women and girls around the world.

As part of an effort to "advance gender equality and women's empowerment," Obama announced his administration's plan to address violence against women, in an order on Friday.

The plan includes the creation of a working group co-chaired by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Rajiv Shah, the Administrator of the Agency for International Development.

The working group also will have representatives from a number of federal agencies, and is to establish benchmark goals in the next three years, the president said.

Obama's strategy includes efforts to improve coordination among agencies that deal with violence against women, as well as improvement in collection and use of data.

The plan also asks federal agencies to integrate violence prevention and response into foreign policy work, building on work involving sex trafficking, humanitarian response, and AIDS relief.
