WASHINGTON (CN) - Trade groups for the cattle and lumber industries and the Congress Of Racial Equality challenged the polar bear's listing as an endangered species. The California Cattlemen's Association, the California Forestry Association, and CORE claim in Federal Court that the "regulatory burdens" of the listing will hurt their businesses and cost them money.
"Environmental regulation and litigation, like that precipitated by the listing of the polar bear, drives up the cost of business, as well as the costs of energy, housing, transportation, and food in a way that disproportionately harms the poor, including members of CORE," the civil rights group claims, in a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Plaintiffs want the polar bear taken off the endangered species list. They are represented by the Pacific Legal Foundation in Sacramento.
