Sticky Fingers in the Counting Room

LAS VEGAS (CN) - An insurance company claims two cash counters for the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino stuffed thousands of dollars into their clothes and walked off with it. The casino claims it caught the men doing it on video surveillance.

The National Union Fire Insurance Co. of Pittsburgh claims it was forced to "issue payments in the amount of $831,519."

But the insurer and its co-plaintiff, the casino, allege specifically that the two members of the Hard Rock's "count team" were caught on cameras stuffing only about $28,000 into their coveralls, on various occasions. The complaint does not elucidate the difference in the numbers.

The defendants are Jhirmal Earl Winfield and Sammy Sampson II.

Cash taken from gaming tables is delivered to a secure room where it is counted and recorded. The Hard Rock claims the defendants stole thousands of dollars at a time "by placing the cash in their clothing (coveralls) to avoid detection." (Parentheses in complaint.)

Winfield has pleaded guilty to attempted theft, the complaint states.

The casino and the insurer seek damages for fraud and unjust enrichment. They are represented by James Murphy with Laxalt & Nomura.
