State Would Crimp Unions’ Closed Shops

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - A Missouri House committee endorsed a "Right to Work" bill that would prohibit closed union shops.

Supporters claim the measure would help Missouri compete for jobs and would reduce the cost of living compared to neighboring "Right to Work" states such as Illinois.

Labor unions claim that such laws drive down collectively bargained wages, and that nonmembers benefit from the better wages and benefits that the unions secure.

The bill was endorsed by the House Workforce Development and Workforce Safety Committee on Monday along with a bill that would change how unions can collect dues.

That bill would require unions to get annual written authorization to collect dues that are automatically deducted from worker's paychecks.

If both measures clear the Legislature, then they would go to statewide ballot.
