State Wants Landfill Closed

CLAYTON, Mo. (CN) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster asked the St. Louis County Court to shut down a Southwest St. Louis County landfill. Koster says Peerless Landfill has no complied with a consent judgment that required it to have a system to control methane gas emissions and insurance on it.

Koster said the landfill has missed several deadlines for compliance. If granted, his motion would close the landfill in accordance with Missouri Solid Waste Management Law and order owners to control release of methane gas within regulatory limits, get insurance and pay penalties to the state.

"It is critically important to Missouri's environment and the health and safety of the public that we force businesses to comply with our environmental laws," Koster said in a statement. "As Attorney General, I intend to make sure that landfills across the state operate in ways that avoid environmental harm and also have in place the resources to correct any problems."

Peerless Landfill is in Valley Park, 20 miles southwest of St. Louis.
