State Sues Prisons Medical Contractor

SANTA FE, N.M. (CN) - The State of New Mexico demands more than $1 million from Wexford Health Sources, for inadequate medical care in state juvenile prisons. The state claims Wexford committed at least 2,018 "medical errors" from July 2006 through May 2007. The ACLU sued New Mexico for inadequate care in state youth prisons; the state claims four of the five bases of the ACLU complaint involve services Wexford was supposed to provide.

The state demands $1 million for breach of contract, and says it will demand more if it is found liable in the ACLU lawsuit. The Children, Youth and Families Department filed the complaint in Santa Fe County Court.
