ANNAPOLIS, Md. (CN) - Liberty Yacht Club built a fixed pier, a bulkhead and other fixtures in state wetlands without a license, Maryland's Department of the Environment says in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court. Maryland says Liberty Yacht Club's construction at its Edgewater marina violated the Tidal Wetlands Act.
The state says it received complaints about an unauthorized pier at Liberty's marina in 2005, and the yacht club has refused to remove the structures despite numerous requests.
"Specifically, Liberty installed mooring pilings, a fixed pier, finger piers, and a bulkhead filling state tidal wetlands and state wetlands, and installed a U-shaped floating dock outside the permissible area for such a structure," Maryland says.
Maryland seeks $40,000 in civil penalties for four violations of the Tidal Wetlands Act, and wants the yacht club to dismantle its unauthorized structures.
