State Says TelTech Sells Illegal Gizmos

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Teltech Systems sold illegal electronic voice-altering and lie-detector devices for use on telephones, California claims in Superior Court. The state seeks damages for deceptive trade in Teltech's Spoof Card, Love Detect and LiarCard "services."

"The SpoofCard service allows a SpoofCard user to disguise his or her telephone number from the called party, to change the customer's voice tone from one se to another, and it allows the customer to surreptitiously record telephone conversations," the state says. "(U)se of certain of the service's features is unlawful in California."

The Love Detect and LiarCard "are represented as emotion detectors and voice analysis technology which allow the Love Detect or LiarCard user to surreptitiously evaluate the truthfulness of statements made by the other party in a telephone conversation." This is illegal in California, unless the second party gives consent in advance.

"The TelTech Web site promoting these products does not advise prospective users that the use of such products could be a violation of state law if either party is located within California," the state says.

It demands $2,500 fines for each violation of two state laws.
