SALT LAKE CITY (CN) - A Utah petroleum refinery is polluting the air with nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, particulates and carbon monoxide, prosecutors say in Federal Court. Utah and the United States sued the Holly Refining and Marketing Co.
The refinery is accused of failing to get permits, to undergo review required by the Clean Air Act, or install emissions controls for its regenerator, heaters and boilers. Holly also failed to "fully and accurately" report pollution from its petroleum and asphalt refining, the complaint states. Holly also is accused of failing to report leaking valves and failed to notify federal, state and local authorities of its excessive release of hazardous substances, including benzene, a carcinogen.
The company faces civil penalties of up to $75,000 per day. The Woods Cross Refinery is 10 miles north of Salt Lake City.
