State Cites Dish Network for Icing

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (CN) - Dish Network, the "official TV sponsor of the St. Louis Blues" has given hockey fans an empty plate, Attorney General Chris Koster said. "In fact, Dish customers are not able to watch the Blues games, and have no assurance that they will be able to do so in the future," Koster said, citing Dish's dispute with the Fox Network, which carries the Blues games.

Dish advertises itself as "the official TV sponsor of the St. Louis Blues" and has a large banner proclaiming it outside of the Scottrade Center, the Blues' home rink. But Dish is not broadcasting Fox Sports Midwest because of the contract dispute.

"Such advertisements mislead consumers and should be attended to by Dish Network," the attorney general said in a statement.

Koster sent a letter to Dish on Oct. 21, asking it to notify subscribers that they may cancel their satellite service without paying Dish's hefty cancellation fee, which can cost up to $425. The letter gave Dish until Nov. 3 to respond.

Koster sent another letter to Dish on Oct. 26, asking it to address its advertising that promotes its Blues coverage, and outlining the steps it will take to resolve what is now a false claim.

"Our job is to protect consumers from unfair business practices, and that is why we are asking that Dish Network address how they are treating current customers and how they are advertising to Missouri citizens," Koster said. "As the blackout of Fox Sports Midwest and other channels continues, Missouri subscribers should not be the ones left holding the bag."
