State Busts Alleged Charity Scam

CHICAGO (CN) - Illinois claims Nevada-based telemarketer Community Support Inc. keeps 85 to 92 percent of the money it raises for charities - many of them allegedly for disabled children and police officers - and that 30 other states are investigating it too.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan says Illinois and other states have demanded information from CSI, and that it provided "approximately 30 percent of the information demanded."

Madigan says CSI telemarketers claim to be raising money for groups that include the American Foundation for Disabled Children, the Law Enforcement Alliance of America, the Disable Police Officers Counseling Center, the Police Officer's Safety Association, the Police Protective Fund, the Cancer Center for Detection and Prevention, the Disabled Police Officers of America, the National Association of Police Athletic/Activities League, The Medical Support Association, the Firefighters Charitable Foundation, and the United States Deputy Sheriff's Association.

Madigan seeks disgorgement and a permanent injunction, in Cook County Chancery Court.
