ST. LOUIS - City Police Chief Joe Mokwa retired Friday amid a scandal over his daughter's alleged free use of impounded vehicles. Assistant Chief Stephen Pollihan has been named the interim chief.
A week ago, allegations surfaced about Mokwa's daughter and several unnamed officers using impounded cars for free from a towing company with a contract with the department.
St. Louis Police Board President Chris Goodson said Mokwa made the offer several days ago and that it was unanimously accepted by the board.
Mokwa will receive $100,000 in severance pay and the board will cover any pending litigation involving Mokwa's tenure. The board voted 4-1 to accept the severance package, with Mayor Francis Slay the only no vote. Mokwa took over as chief in 2001.
