WASHINGTON (CN) - The Food and Drug Administration is requiring new warnings on over-the-counter contraceptives containing the spermicide Nonoxynol 9. One setof warnings is standard; the other isnot.
One set ofwarnings advises consumers that the contraceptive does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. The other set advisesthatvaginal contraceptives containing Nonoxynol 9 can irritate the vagina and rectum and may increase the risk of getting HIV from an infected partner.
