Spanish Police Seek Fine for Shoppng Bag Letters

MADRID (AP) — Police are trying to use Spain's public security law to fine a woman for carrying a bag bearing the initials A.C.A.B., which they interpreted to stand for "All Cops Are Bastards" and not "All Cats Are Beautiful," as was written on the bag.

A spokesman said Tuesday the type and coloring of the lettering are traditionally associated with the insult to police. He spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with police regulations.

The fine was proposed under 2015 legislation that was nicknamed the "gag law" and criticized by journalists and rights groups.

The woman told several Spanish news outlets that police stopped her Sunday in Madrid.
