SAN DIEGO (CN) - The company behind an $843-million toll road in San Diego County filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week, blaming the sluggish economy. The so-called South Bay Expressway runs from state highway 54 in Spring Valley to Otay Mesa Road/state highway 905 near the international border crossing.
South Bay Expressway LP opened the rare West Coast toll road in 2007 in partnership with the California Department of Transportation.
At first hailed as model for private-public transportation, the 10-mile road has seen use, and revenue, decline significantly during the recession. About 22,600 cars use the toll road each day - far fewer than the 60,000 projected, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The road will remain open while the company attempts to reorganize.
