(CN) - A manager at a hazardous waste turn-in facility was sentenced on Monday to an eighteen month prison term and a $92,000 restitution payment after he pleaded guilty to selling ozone depleting substances over the internet.
David Grummer, 43, of Oceanside admitted that he sold and shipped the ozone depleting substance CFC-12 over the internet to persons that he knew did not possess the required EPA certification to purchase the substance. Grummer also sold pesticides such as DDT and Chlordane, which are known to have severe and dangerous affects on humans and the environment.
Grummer shipped the waste products in the form of compressed gases by private commercial interstate carrier and they were not properly declared and classified as hazardous. Grummer obtained the substances by diverting them at the turn in facility which cost his employer and other municipalities over $92,000 in lost revenue.
