LOS ANGELES (CN) - Calling him "cruel and callous," a federal judge on Tuesday sentenced an Internet crook to 10 years in prison and ordered him to repay his victims $1.2 million.
John Winston Boone, 51, of Novato defrauded 18 victims with "a lack of humanist that was so base and so depraved," U.S. District Judge Otis Wright II said in sentencing him.
Boone pleaded guilty in November 2013 to two counts of wire fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in announcing his sentence. He charged stiff fees and claimed he could help people set up online businesses, then took the money and ran, prosecutors said.
In a sentencing memo, prosecutors called Boone a "financial predator, a master manipulator and a pathological liar who will do or say anything to steal money from his victims."
