Sobbing Witness Says She|Saw Bonds Use Steroids

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - A childhood friend of Barry Bonds broke down on the stand Thursday after testifying that she had seen the baseball great receive stomach injections from his trainer, Greg Anderson.

Bonds' mother gave Kathy Hoskins a sympathetic look as the government witness concluded her testimony and fled the courtroom, sobbing.

A former personal shopper for Bonds, Hoskins continually removed her glasses and dabbed at her eyes during her testimony, particularly when asked about the falling out between Bonds and her brother, Steve Hoskins, who testified last week about Bonds' alleged steroid use.

The Hoskins first met Bonds as children growing up in the 1970s Bay Area. Kathy told prosecutors that she took the baseball superstar to her Sadie Hawkins dance in high school. The pair fell out of touch when Bonds went off to college in Arizona, but reunited years later. Hoskins recalled on the stand that she became his personal shopper after Bonds boasted about some clothing purchases.

"I told him those clothes were wack, and that I could shop better for him," she said, adding that she also packed for Bonds' road trips and his travels to Arizona for spring training.

While she packed, Anderson was often "milling around" Bonds' bedroom, but only for five to 10 minutes at a time, Hoskins said. It was during one such occasion that she says say witnessed Anderson give Bonds an injection in the stomach.

Hoskins testified that Bonds told Anderson, "Just do it here," but Anderson seemed hesitant because they were not alone in the room. Bonds then allegedly told Anderson: "That's my girl. She won't say nothing."

Bonds never revealed what the injection was, Hoskins said, and she never asked, but the former Giants player referred to it as "a little somethin' somethin'" that was "undetectable."

Hoskins cried when questioned by defense attorney about Bonds' falling out with her brother, who was Bonds' personal assistant for almost 10 years. "Didn't Barry tell you that Stevie had stolen from him, and he couldn't believe he did that because, from his point of view, he paid Stevie well?" Cristina Arguedas asked. Hoskins agreed, but added later that she didn't know what exactly her brother allegedly stole.

She also confirmed that Bonds had reported Steve to the FBI, and that her brother in turn reported the home run king's steroid abuse. Defense attorneys have said Bonds reported Steve for forging his autograph on baseball memorabilia.

Kathy said Steve had "thrown me under the bus" by asking government agents to subpoena her in the perjury case against Bonds. She said she never wanted to testify in the first place because she "didn't want to be put in the middle of it."

After being excused by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, Hoskins spilled her water glass as she gathered up used tissues.
