Snow & Ice Storm Shuts Down Portland, Oregon

PORTLAND, Ore. (CN) - Icy conditions closed government offices and jammed up the roads in Oregon's largest city on Monday - a normally temperate city unaccustomed to such weather.

Portland residents woke up to a soft snowy blanket on Sunday morning, but the snow quickly turned to ice when topped with freezing rain in the afternoon and evening.

The Multnomah County Courthouse in downtown Portland was closed on Monday. The federal court was scheduled to open at noon.

Car collisions snarled Portland roads on Sunday evening, and one driver plowed into a parked police car. Both the driver and the officer in the car suffered minor injuries.

Transportation officials urged people to stay home. Portland has few snow plows and sanders because snow and ice storms are so rare in the region.
