‘Simpsons’ Star Sued|Over Late Fiance’s Debt

LOS ANGELES (CN) - Two insurance companies sued Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, for money it says her late fiancé took from a client of his construction business and gave to the Church of Scientology just before he committed suicide.

Cartwright's fiancé, Stephen Brackett, killed himself on May 21, 2009.

Before his death, Brackett's company, Brackett Construction, was apparently working on a $485,000 job, rebuilding the Hollywood eatery Off Vine Restaurant after a fire gutted it in April 2008.

The company was unable to finish the project and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy one month after Brackett's death, according to the Superior Court complaint.

American Safety and Casualty Co. claims it was on the hook for the restaurant's $260,000 deposit, which Brackett and Cartwright allegedly "diverted" to the Church of Scientology.

Both were reportedly active members of the church.

American Safety and the National American Insurance Co. of California sued Cartwright and her company, Yo Nancy Inc., for the deposit money.

Richard Busch of Westlake Village, Calif., is representing the insurance companies.
