(CN) - The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration wants to prohibit the use of spearfishing gear in Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary because spearfishing often is used to selectively target larger fish, and can result in a species of fish getting smaller.
"The proposed prohibition would be to provide protection to the fishes and natural live-bottom community for which the sanctuary was designated," said the NOAA's summary of the proposal. "The proposal also would be to facilitate enforcement of an existing prohibition against the use of powerheads within the sanctuary."
