NEW ORLEANS (CN) - A Gretna policeman killed their father with five shots in the back as he sat "unresponsive" in a car, the man's children say in Jefferson Parish Court. The complaint comes on the tail of a New Orleans Police investigator's guilty plea in a cover-up of police shooting deaths in the weeks after Hurricane Katrina.
The children of Michael Manis Jr. say Gretna police Officer Douglas Zemlik killed their father with five shots to the back on Oct. 5, 2005. Their father sat in the car with his seat belt on when he was killed for no reason, the children say.
Manis' son and daughter say their father sat "unresponsive" in a car stopped at Gretna Boulevard and Belle Chase Highway when Zemlik killed him "without provocation."
Bryce and Madison Manis filed the civil rights and wrongful death suit through their natural tutrix. They sued Zemlik, Gretna Police Chief Arthur Lawson, and the City of Gretna.
The FBI said last week that it is conducting two new investigations of New Orleans Police misconduct after Hurricane Katrina, bringing the number of investigations of New Orleans police shootings to seven, according to the Times Picayne.
