(CN) - Democrat Donna Shalala has prevailed in her bid to replace retiring Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, providing her party with an early boost in its bid to recapture the House.
Shalala defeated Republican Maria Elvira Salazar in Florida's 27th Congressional District, in a race that was competitive to the very end.
In recent weeks, the Democratic party poured money into the Miami-area district and Shalala, the former Health and Human Services secretary and University of Miami president, redoubled her efforts to pull ahead, particularly ramping up her Spanish-language advertising.
With 75 percent of the vote in at 8:33 p.m. in the east, Shalala leads Salazar, 50.5 percent to 49.5 percent.
