SF Pays $20K for Cop Beating of Black Cyclist

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - Following a $20,000 settlement, a federal judge dismissed a case in which a 21-year-old man claimed that three San Francisco police officers dragged him from his house and beat him unconscious without probable cause for his arrest.

D'Paris Williams, who is black, sued the city and three police officers in Federal Court in December 2014. He claimed the cops approached him in plainclothes and punched and choked him "because he rode his bicycle on the sidewalk."

Williams and the city reached a settlement this past May. Peter Keith, who represented the city, told Courthouse News the city paid Williams $20,000 and also covered the man's treatment at San Francisco General Hospital, which he said "were in the neighborhood of a few thousand dollars."

U.S. District Judge Samuel Conti officially dismissed the case on Friday.

Neither side could be reached for comment on Tuesday.

Williams was represented by John Burris, whose office is in Oakland, Calif.
