SF Attorney Picked|for Federal Bench

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - President Obama will nominate San Francisco attorney Haywood Gilliam Jr. to San Francisco's federal bench to replace Chief District Judge Claudia Wilken when she takes senior status in December, the White House said.

Gilliam, 44, has been a partner at Covington & Burling since 2009, specializing in white-collar defense, internal investigations, regulatory enforcement, securities, antitrust and commercial law. He was a partner at Bingham McCutchen from 2006 to 2009, assistant U.S. attorney in the Northern District of California from 1999 to 2006, and was chief of that office's securities fraud section in 2005-06.

Gilliam got his bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from Yale in 1991. He got his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1994.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California had 6,826 new case filings in 2013: 488 for each of its 14 judges.
