Sexed Semen Didn’t Work, Dairyman Says

NAMPA, Idaho (CN) - The specialty semen didn't do the trick, a dairyman says in a $1 million claim in Canyon County Court. He claims ABS Global promised that its "specialized ... sexed semen" would produce "90% or better female calves," but actually impregnated only 15 of 100 heifers.

Curtis Yett managed an LLC dairy company, which has gone out of business. The complaint does not explicitly attribute the business bust to the failed insemination.

But Yett claims that ABS Global promised that its "sexed semen" would impregnate 80 percent of the heifers in his feedlot, and that 90 percent or more of the calves would be cows.

Cows are more valuable than bulls in the dairy business, for obvious reasons.

Yett says ABS Global spent about 8 months on the job and painted green marks on the tailbones of each cow, allegedly to indicate that she had been impregnated with the specialty sperm.

But Yett says ABS only impregnated 15 out of 100 heifers, that 90 percent or more were not female, and that ABS and the employee it sent to do the insemination knew that the statements they made about successful impregnation were false, but made them to keep the money coming.

Yett demands more than $1 million for fraud, negligence and unjust enrichment. He is represented by Ron Shepherd with Hamilton, Michaelson & Hilty, of Nampa.
