Seventh Circuit Denies Asylum To Pakistani Man

CHICAGO (CN) - The Seventh Circuit denied asylum to a Pakistani man who claimed he did not receive a fair hearing because the immigration judge barred him from filing an asylum application.

The circuit held that Abdul Ghaffar Mohammad Hussain had actually filed the application, but later withdrew it in exchange for a longer period of voluntary departure.

The court also ruled that it lacks jurisdiction to decide whether Hussain's obligation to register under the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System violated his equal protection rights by spurring the removal proceedings against him. See ruling in Hussain v. Keisler.
