Sergeant Pleads Guilty|in Bagram Bribery Case

(CN) - An Army sergeant on Tuesday admitted taking $90,000 in bribes from a Pentagon contractor to award it contracts at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan. Ana C. Chavez, who worked at the base's Transportation Operations Support Office in 2005-06, will avoid prison and cooperate with the investigation, the Justice Department said.

Chavez admitted in New Jersey Federal Court that she took the bribes in cash and wire transfers, and conspired with a second contractor to launder the money.

Chavez could have received up to 35 years in prison and been fined nearly $1 million.
