Sentence amended, to little effect

LAKE CHARLES, La. — An appeals court in Louisiana amends an armed robbery convict’s life sentence at hard labor. He pistol-whipped a church’s pianist after leading the victim to believe the defendant was attempting suicide. After finding the victim had only $8 in his wallet, he let him go to the bank alone to withdraw more money, but instead the pianist drove to a hospital and called the police. A court-imposed five-year sentence enhancement that prosecutors did not request is rolled back.
