Senate Passes|Health Care Bill

WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Senate passed a landmark health care bill on Christmas Eve that would offer health insurance to more than 30 million Americans. Fifty-eight Democrats and two independents helped approve the bill in a 60-39 vote that ended months of heated debates.

The bill must still be merged with a House version before President Obama can sign it into law.

The bill would require almost every American to carry health insurance, and would ban the insurance industry from denying benefits based on pre-existing medical conditions.
