Senate Confirms Federal Judge for Missouri

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Senate unanimously confirmed St. Louis County Circuit Judge John A. Ross to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.

Ross, who was nominated by President Barack Obama in December 2010, will fill a vacancy left when Judge Charles Shaw went into semi-retirement. The Senate confirmed his nomination on Tuesday.

Ross, born in 1954, became a St. Louis County judge in 2000 and has been the court's presiding judge since 2009.

Before taking the bench, Ross was a county counselor for St. Louis County and a chief trial attorney in the office of the St. Louis County prosecuting attorney. He is a graduate of Emory University Law School.

"Judge John Ross's confirmation is a recognition of his outstanding career as an impartial advocate for justice and a victory for the Eastern District Court," Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said in a statement. "I know he'll serve the people of Missouri and the United States with a commitment to fairness, thoughtfulness, and truth."
