Screwy confession

SAN FRANCISCO — The Ninth Circuit vacated the conviction and sentences of a suspect who was involved in a chaotic firefight with Customs and Border Patrol agents in Arizona, leading to the death of one federal agent. The suspect says he’s entitled to a new trial because his lawyer gave obviously bad advice, telling him he was safe to confess his intent to rob drug smugglers “because robbing drug smugglers is not a crime.”
