Schoolteacher Says Escalator Scalped Her

HOUSTON (CN) - A teacher was scalped and a principal broke her leg when an escalator accelerated without warning and knocked most of its riders down during a national teachers conference at the George R. Brown Convention Center, the educators claim in Harris County Court.

Sherri Hennig says the escalator's sudden acceleration threw a pile of teachers to the bottom, and its fast-moving metal teeth grabbed her hair and she "was scalped." Louise Powell says she broke her leg and her knee was permanently damaged.

They sued the Schindler Elevator Co., which maintains the escalator, and the City of Houston, which owns the convention center.

The plaintiffs were attending a national middle-school teacher's conference in November 2007 when the accident happened. They are represented by Rod Squires of Waco.
