School Shooting in Oregon Leaves 10 Dead

ROSEBURG, Ore. (CN) - A gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning, killing nine and injuring others. He died at the scene as well.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has declined to name either the victims or the gunman.

NBC News is reporting that it took just 11 minutes from the initial 10:38 a.m. call about shots being fired until the officers neutralized the shooter.

State police said there was only one shooter, and that there "is no longer a threat."

The shooter fired through a window in Snyder Hall, an academic building, and shot writing teacher in the head, student Kortney Moore told NRToday, which is the local newspaper.

Reports say the shooter entered the building, told everyone to get on the ground, then asked everyone to stand up and state their religion and began firing.

"I was walking into class, and I heard what sounded like a car backfiring," Courtney Rennie, 23, a second-year human services student, told NBC News.

"You don't even think that's somebody shooting a gun," Rennie said, but "I kept envisioning someone is going to come around the corner and shoot the windows out."

Students were taken by bus to the Douglas County Fairgrounds, where about 200 people waited for them. Red Cross grief counselors were available at the fairgrounds.

Umpqua is a two-year school with about 3,300 full-time students and 16,000 part-time students. It started offering classes in 1961.
