JACKSBORO, Tenn. (CN) - A former high school principal claims that after a student shot and seriously wounded him, the Campbell County Board of Education demoted him, cut his pay and replaced him with a younger person with less seniority.
Gary Seale, 58, says he's worked for Campbell County schools since 1972, first as a teacher, and as a principal beginning in 2004. O Nov. 8, 2005, Seale says, assistant principal Jim Pierce called him to Pierce's office about a discipline problem with a student. In Pierce's office, Seale says, the student pulled a gun from his pocket and shot and killed assistant principal Ken Bruce, and wounded Seale and Pierce.
Seale says he still suffers from his gunshot wounds to the body. He claims the school district transferred him and replaced him with a younger employee in July 2008, then demoted him to teacher at a substantial pay cut. He claims this was in retaliation for seeking workers comp benefits and from the handicaps he suffers from being shot. He wants his job back and economic damages. He is represented in Campbell County Court by David Dunaway of LaFollette, Tenn.
